8 May 2012 - there were 16 golfers playing at Permata Sentul Golf & Country Club outside Jakarta about 90 minutes drive from Sukarno Hatta International Airport.  In the bus, on the way from the airport each golfer was requested to declare their best handicap based on sincerity, professionalism and integrity. We saluted to those who declared their their best handicap and we can only speculate why golfers who can play 10 or 14 opted to declare 18..so to speak! Nevertheless the organizing committee of Amirsham, Raja Razak, Johny and Annuar got the handicap they wanted for scoring purposes.

After the tee-off all flights went their own way so I could only captured the treasured moments of some people and mostly my flight mates! Enjoy the photos.

For all the extra work Bangdolah has to endure by switching tasks taking photographs and playing golf, he still managed a 2 under 43 in the first nine! The second nine was abandoned after 12 holes due to rain and thunderstorm and everybody went to the clubhouse for drinks.

The event was scheduled way back in February 2012 to allow working members to apply for their annual leave and that includes me who at 58 is still working and plays golf off a handicap of USGA 17.8 which means 20 from the Blue Tee and 19 from the White Tee. For this outing I declared 18 because we are going to play on beautiful courses and scores could be lower. Taking the Garuda Airlines under the Liberty Golf Package cost us RM 530 return which is a good deal as there are no charges for Golf Bag unlike the so-called low fares airlines who charges RM75 one way for sports equipment for over-the counter check-in and RM 50 for  online payment my friend that's RM 150 both ways and you have to pay for your meals on board. 

I left the house at 4.30 am to my son's place and left the car there and he sent me to airport, thank you for willingness to sacrifice your sleep for me. The first person I met at the airport was Ghazali with his wife and two sons and later Norazmi. The rest of the golfers were strangers to me. The golfers met at Gate A for a group check and off we went for the Subuh prayers at the Airport Surau near the International departure gate.

The flight was on time and everybody was excited and some tried their skill at speaking Indonesian, some really can speak like Indonesian....we can assumed that they are regular Indonesian travelers. Upon arriving at Jakarta airport we were met and greet by the tour agent representatives and were ushered to the air-conditioned bus for the trip to Permata Sentul Golf & country Club about 1 1/2 hours drive from the airport.

GOLFING AT MANGELANG, JOGJAKARTA, INDONESIA

The Borobudur international golf Club is located in Mangelang about 40 km from Jogjakarta and about 60++ from Semarang. It is located next to the Military Academy but not to worry there would be no stray bullets there...driving in a Toyota Innova from our hotel in Jogjakarta, we arrived at the Golf Club around 3 pm and tee-off at about 3.15 pm after submitting our golf voucher to the registration counter. It cost me IRD 600,000 (RM 204.00) to play on Friday as it is charging weekend rate, otherwise the green fee woulf only be at IRD 410,000 (RM 140.00) all in. There is no Senior Golfers rate offered by the club. We book cewek caddy each as always as they are inclusive in the green fee.

Nobody made par on this Par 3 even though the green speed was only 8.5 due to its slope and undulating contour.

GOMBEL GOLF SEMARANG

Gombel Golf Club in Semarang, Indonesia was open in 2006 just in the outskirt of Semarang towards Jogjakarta approximately 20 minutes from Simpang Lima area where I stayed. I played 9 holes and then another 18 holes before moving to Jogjakarta. The clubhouse is huge and changing room was also large and clean and they have a golf shop under Nickent because there were a lot of Nickent products in the shop. I didn't buy any golf shirts as the materials was not that good.

After registering at the counter, playing 3 people and paid IDR 660,000 (RM 225.00) including green fees, cart, caddies (requested for cewek) and insurance we went to the 10th tee. My friend also rented a set for IDR 150,000 (RM 51.00) and got a Precept graphite irons, Taylor Made R7 drivers and fairway woods. The other sets for rental were Mizuno irons and Taylormade Rac irons, not many choices.

Teeing from the Black tee, hole 10 is a Par 5 503 yards and bunkers are waiting at 200++ in the fairway. The second shot has to carry a water hazard and that would leave a pitching wedge shot to the green. I reached the green in 3 but 4 putted for double bogey. There are many interesting holes at the back-nine and I got 2 pars for a 46 score.

The next morning we arrived at the clubhouse at 6.30 in the morning and paid IDR 873,000 (RM 296.00) to play 18 holes and this time we got different ceweks for our caddies. The caddies worked only one shift, either morning or afternoon. We have two senior golfers in the group and they paid less for green fees.

The front nine I played 47 and the back nine I played 42 for a 89 gross score. The other two friends played 98 (49+49) and 103 (54+49) and it was a very enjoyable experience and would recommend fellow golfers to try this course.

JAKARTA GOLF TOUR 8-11 MAY 2012

The news was brief when it came today, flight by GARUDA AIRLINES GA819 at 0810 hrs and expected time of arrival 0910 hrs Indonesia time. Meet and greet by local travel agent and off we go for the first round of golf at the Imperial Golf Club, Tangerang. A look at the course on the internet tells me that it suited my game fine, narrow fairways and a lot of water...even an island Par 3 at the 5th Hole, but before that just look at this Hole 4, Par 4 playing 353 yards from the Black Tee. You can either play the island fairway or to the right..whichever way suits you!


This Par 3 157 yards is not that scary, just a 7 iron for most of the guys..and perhaps a Hybrid 5 for me, suitable for carry of 144 meters.







The final programme has yet to be confirmed as local travel agent has not confirmed tee-off time for Permata Sentul and Pondok Indah. Anyway the 1st day tee-off is confirmed!
